Xenophon targets Qld iPhone gambling app

Senator Nick Xenophon has a Queensland games manufacturer on his hit list for making iPhone gambling applications that can be downloaded by children.

Cairns-based Pokie Magic designs iPhone applications based on poker machines played in pubs and clubs in Australia with 20 lines, free spin features and double-up options, which are available for children to download for free.

The applications are sold by US-based Big Fish Games with a recommended 12+ rating.

Senator Xenophon told AAP he deplored children being conditioned to play poker machines without the realisation they can lose and that their lives can be destroyed.

He said he would move to ban any Australian business making, distributing or profiting from the sale of gambling applications to Australian children.

“If they are an Australian corporation, then we can legislate to stop this,” Senator Xenophon told AAP.

“The odds of winning on an iPhone application are not the same as those in reality.

“Children will play these applications thinking they cannot lose when in reality you cannot win.

“We need an overhaul of our laws because the technological world has moved so quickly our laws are out of date and we need a national approach to this.”

Big Fish Games director Katie Brinks told AAP the company merely on-sold the application on behalf of Pokie Magic.

“We are not the developer of this game; we are merely a distributor of the online version,” she told AAP.

“If you look at the applications on the iTunes store, you’ll see that it is created and sold by Pokie Magic on iTunes.

“The guidelines they’ve provided there with regard to the age group are their own.

“I will be contacting Senator Xenophon to clarify this as well.”

A spokesperson from Queensland’s Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulations said the state already possessed some of the strongest gaming regulations in Australia.

“However, parents are encouraged to be vigilant with their children’s access to mobile phone applications,” the spokesperson said.

“As with any technology the best form of regulation for children is parental supervision.”

The spokesperson was unaware if any financial grants have been provided to Pokie Magic.

Pokie Magic was contacted on Friday for comment but did not respond.

April 30th – Daily Deal

April 30, 2010 :: Posted by - :: Category - POKER NEWS

On today’s Daily Deal, Jen Harman hosts a charity fundraiser, there’s controversy about the next contender in the Durrrr Challenge, a founding instructor leaves Cardrunners, and great news for poker players around the world.

Hello, I’m Sean Gibson and welcome to the Daily Deal by Poker News Daily, brought to you by PokerSource.com.

Full Tilt Pro Jennifer Harman will present the second annual Throw Down Poker Championship on May eighth. The event will span several casinos, and feature a unique ten-player team format along with standard tourney play. Prizes include a $10,000 entry to the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event. More than three hundred participants and forty poker pros and celebrities are confirmed, including new WPT champion David Williams and poker beauties Lacey Jones and Trishelle Cannatella. Proceeds from the Throw Down Championship will go to one of Harman’s dearest causes: the National Kidney Foundation.

Online poker prodigy Tom Dwan – best known as “Durrrr” – told Bluff magazine that CardRunners instructor Brian Townsend was the next contender for his Million Dollar Challenge. The poker world was already looking forward to huge online sessions between Dwan and Townsend, when Dwan surprised everyone with a recent post on TwoPlusTwo, saying: “Long story, but he’s not next. I’ll blog after seshy.” There have been no new entries on Dwan’s blog since April 15. We’ll keep you posted as the story develops. When we return, big changes at Cardrunners and some fantastic news for poker players.

In a stunning announcement on his blog yesterday, Cole “CTS” South revealed that he will no longer be a teacher or stakeholder at Cardrunners, citing personal reasons and life priorities. His post said, in part:

“In the past year I have (…) found myself spread too thin. Leaving CardRunners has been an incredibly tough decision for me, but it will allow me to focus on playing poker and completing my degree.”

South is a junior majoring in economics at Georgetown University in D.C. Cardrunners is set to launch a new version today.

Exactly one year to the day after it was founded, the International Federation of Poker accomplished a major goal yesterday when poker was officially accepted as a “mind sport” by the International Mind Sports Association.

The next step is securing membership of SportAccord, a global organization of a hundred and fifty sports federations, which might help eventually get poker into the Olympic Games. Poker will now join Chess and Bridge as part of IMSA’s World Mind Sports Games, to be held in the UK in two thousand twelve alongside the London Olympics. The IFP will also be launching poker’s first annual World Championships next year.

Maridu Mayrinck – Poker Player Profile

April 30, 2010 :: Posted by - :: Category - POKER NEWS

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Maria Eduarda “Maridu” Mayrinck graduated from university with a sociology degree and quickly entered the media industry, working as a screenwriter for several sitcoms on the Brazilian network Globo TV. After becoming obsessed with poker, she began blogging assiduously about the game, and her blog “Need an Ace” quickly gained a cult-like following in her home country. She then earned a spot on PokerStars’ blogging team, but it wasn’t until she developed her skills on the tables that her career really took off.

Maridu honed her poker skills, like so many others, by watching the best and trying to absorb as much as possible. She found some success online and finally, in 2007, decided to venture into the live tournament arena. In June of that year, she made the final table of a $1000 event at the Bellagio Cup III, cashing in fourth for $7.7K. At the 2008 World Series of Poker, she cashed in three events; 233rd in $1500 No Limit Hold’em for $4K, 35th in $1000 Ladies World Championship No Limit Hold’em for $4.7K, and 36th in $2000 No Limit Hold’em for $10.7K. In October of 2009, she hit her biggest live score to date, taking 43rd at the European Poker Tour stop in London for $20K. All told, Maridu has over $60K in live tournament earnings. She plays online as “Cash4PlasticSurgery” in Party Poker, “MariaRJ” in Full Tilt and “Maridu” in her home room, Poker Stars .

Away from the tables, Maridu loves to watch reality TV shows, go shopping, read about fashion, and travel.

Bubbly and outgoing, Maridu is a great ambassador to the game both for women and her homeland of Brazil. She hasn’t hit that life-changing score yet, but she has the talent and the desire, so success seems inevitable. Maridu is a member of Team PokerStars Pro and can be found playing online under the screen name ‘Maridu’.
